The Electrolux vacuum cleaner began as a concept by eventual Electrolux owner Axel Wenner-Gren.
About 90 years ago, he was walking down the street in Vienna, Austria, when he saw a vacuum cleaner in the window of a shop.
He got the idea that there should be one in every home, and was sure that vacuum cleaners could be adapted for domestic, single-home use.
He persuaded the company Electrolux (spelled “Elektrolux” in Sweden) to buy the patent to an existing vacuum model in 1919 and to pay him for any sales in company stock.
By the early 1930s, he owned Electrolux and their vacuum cleaners and refrigerators were top sellers.
The first vacuum cleaner, the Lux 1, was built in 1912, with Wenner-Gren serving as the Lux agent in Germany.
In 1915, Wenner-Gren set up the sales company Svenska Elektron, which became very successful in home demonstration vacuum sales.
On August 1, 1919, Lux and Svenska Elektron agreed that Elektron would have the sole right to sell Lux vacuum cleaners and on August 29, Elektromekaniska, which was owned by Svenska Elektron, changed its name to “Electrolux.”
Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners Popular Models and Common Features
Since then, Electrolux has markedly expanded both its “footprint” in the industry, becoming one of the major vacuum cleaner sellers and has greatly increased its offerings, from just one model to dozens, worldwide.
It was the first company to offer the automatic vacuum cleaner, the Trilobite, which is available at Amazon.com.
